The Prince of Wales will represent Britain at this weekend’s D-Day 65th anniversary commemorations after he stepped in at the 11th hour to demand an invitation from the French.
The dramatic U-turn came just five days after Buckingham Palace admitted not a single member of the Royal Family would attend the Normandy ceremonies, the last chance many ageing veterans will have to visit the battlefields to honour fallen comrades.
It marks a victory for the Daily Mail’s campaign to win recognition for the D-Day veterans, finally ending a sorry saga that has lasted months after both the French and British governments dragged their heels.
